Fashion experts say consumers can really get more "bang for their buck" if they look for smart pieces that work well through fall and winter seasons. The Tribune asked two Utah boutique owners for tips on what's on sale this month.

Lori Harris, owner of Mary Jane's shoe and clothing boutique, 613 S. Main, Park City.

Flat sandals in black or chocolate brown » Sandals were big this year and will still be fashionable next spring. Stick with a versatile color such as black or chocolate brown. For fashion longevity, avoid bright colors.

Summer dresses in a bright colors » Hot pink, orange, teal and even white.

These are useful as swimsuit coverups or can be worn in winter with a sweater or blazer, which are coming back into style this winter.

Long "maxi" dresses » These full-length dresses can still be worn into the fall and winter. Look for a dress in a fall or winter fabric, such as chiffon or satin, not cotton. The right dress can make a great outfit for the holiday parties.

Animal prints » Zebra and cheetah are the two most popular patterns. Look for summer dresses, skirts and even tops. For winter, add a solid blazer or sweater on top; wear tights underneath.

Chunky "statement" necklaces and cocktail rings » Skip the beads and jewels. Instead, look for necklaces with chains made of metal or leather cording, or wear several necklaces of different lengths together. Cocktails rings with big rhinestones or gems will look new through fall and the holidays.

Capris » Wear them with high boots in the winter; no need to tuck them in.

Over-the-shoulder satchel and messenger bags » They may be designed for the beach, but they make great bags for schoolbooks and work files.

Blouses » The layered look is especially easy with sleeveless and short-sleeved tops. Add a cardigan or blazer over the top; or wear a long-sleeved thermal T-shirt underneath. Stick with basic solids -- no prints -- that can be reused every season.
