“Spring Closet Cleaning = New Wardrobe = Being Green” By Lori Harris

April is the month of change, recycling and earth days. Use this time to go through your closet and save the earth and the consignment stores from bearing the brunt of those items you forgot you owned. As we all know in fashion, old becomes new again every few years…usually about the time we have forgotten how bad the trends looked on us the last time. Here are some tips on how to recycle within your own closet.

Do’s
Do break out those old cowboy boots and add some shine or color to them for this spring. Here is a fun tip: get a can of spray paint in a shade of red or yellow and let all the old cracks and distress show through on the boot. This will really kick up your usual skinny jeans (Blank $75) and t-shirt wardrobe.
Do borrow your husband’s (or an ex’s) suit vest from the 70’s and wear it over a spring or summer dress. A vest adds an edge to a bohemian look. Crochet and suede vests (BB Dakota $69) are popular this summer too paired with shorts and tees. Match either of these with cowboy or shortie Moto boots (Frye $235) and you are ready for night out with the girls.
Do try remaking the old Bon Jovi fringe jacket that is still hiding in the far corners of your closet. Get a pair of super sharp scissors and cut off the fringe as close to the seam as you can get leaving a strip of fringe for you to use with some double sided tape to jazz up an old black or brown purse. Now you have a purse and a rockin’ leather jacket to wear out at night over the hottest silk Maxi dresses by Super Lucky Cat ($115).
Do take your old boyfriends jeans and cut them off just above the knee. Cuff them and grab an old rope to create a cinched waist. Pair these jeans with an old polo shirt, long cardigan, and a pair of gladiator sandals (Frye Avery T Strap $169) for a just got off the sailboat look.

Don’ts
Don’t try to recycle the “daisy dukes” you wore back in the 90’s. Even if those come back…you are way to old to be shaking that thang anymore in public. Save those for the next rollerskating or rap costume party.
Don’t wear the matching tank and cardigan with white Capri pants. This preppy trend is for the east coast where air kisses and pink lipstick still fly. You can mismatch these items with your safari or bohemian items but just don’t wear them together.
Don’t break out the MC Hammer pants aka Harem pant…please I beg you. Yes I know every magazine and fashionista on the planet is raving about these but do you really want to look like you have more junk in your trunk? Wear fashion that flatters not fattens.

Donations
Donate anything that is over one size too small. Sure you can try it on one last time, and yes we all have high hopes of shedding those extra winter pounds we packed on, but let’s get real ladies. Most of us are not getting on the Biggest Loser any time soon nor do we have 6 extra hours each day to just sweat to the oldies. Give those things away and take back your closet.

Until next time, remember donations make other people happy and give you a tax writeoff.

“It Can’t Be Spring, Winter Just Started” By Lori Harris

For most of the country March marks the arrival of spring - the grass turns green, flowers begin to sprout and we shed our extra layers from the winter to show our pasty skin under new spring outfits aglow in bright yellows, oranges, and blues. For us Parkites, the blues may be all we have for a while. Spring may never come due to the layers of snow and summer won’t begin until late June. So what’s a girl to do with all these new spring fashions in our winter wonderland and how does she keep wearing them through the summer.

Do’s
Do sport a feminine cut western shirt this spring season. Try Taxi CDC’s recycled vintage western shirts with snap pockets, ¾ sleeves, and in bright spring plaids of orange or teal blue ($99). Throw on a long boyfriend cardigan in a neutral tone and a skinny belt to keep you from feeling too much like a cowboy. When summer hits, try this shirt with a white short from Volcom ($49) and a woven sandal from Jeffery Campbell ($75).
Do go with western footwear. In keeping with the western theme, break out your spring colored cowboy boots like Frye’s Maxine Bootie ($235) with harness in cherry red. Tuck your skinny jeans in to them and a long camisole and short bomber style jacket. When it is time to shed the jacket and jeans, try a gauzy cotton dress in white or light yellow with cap sleeves matched with a cowboy inspired boot such as Bronx short teal suede bootie ($110). Why not? This is the Wild West right?
Do wear a white trench coat over a black button down and black trousers. It may seem like a summer color and yes it is way before Memorial Day but a crisp white cotton trench coat from Coffeeshop ($135) will get you noticed whether you are going to your restaurant job or a night out on the town. As we move toward May and June, pair the white trench with the latest jumpsuits from Veronica M ($99) or ArynK ($110).
Do try a spring dress but wear layers with it to keep from freezing you’re a** off. Scrapbook’s ruffled halter dress ($109) in shades of purple and blue layered over a black turtleneck and tights topped off by June’s feminine take on a bomber jacket in violet leather ($499) paired with Seychelles black platform peeptoe pumps (50% off at $55). Once it warms up you can toss the layers and add an espadrille wedge to the mix and use this dress all summer long.
Do wear color especially on your legs. Yellow, green, purple and blues are hot in skinny jeans this spring from Blank and Volcom ($75). To keep it winter themed and stay warm, wear black tall or flat boots, a long sleeved scoop neck top and a striped cardigan belted. Throw on a relaxed beanie and a spring colored scarf (Glam Vintage $39 or Urban Showroom $29) and you are set to go to work, for a day of shopping or just to hang out. As the warmer months approach, pair your colored jeans with an updated gladiator sandal such as the Lovely People’s Avery ($135) in black suede and fringe and a slouchy tank top.

Don’ts
Don’t do a “Britney” from Sundance a few years ago…stiletto sandals and camisole tops without a coat are still a no no in this weather. Unless you want pneumonia, cover up with a cropped blazer and wear a bootie or pump on your feet.
Don’t wear silk or chiffon dresses over tights or under a sweater unless you hold an unlimited supply of static guard or really like to show the entire outline of your thighs. Stick to dresses in cotton or lightweight knit materials.
Don’t wear chunky sweaters in wool or cable knits after February unless your name is Muffy and you are living much further east than Park City. It’s time to move towards the lighter weight cotton and linen sweaters for the spring.
Don’t overwear a trend. This spring western is huge, one piece at a time will be fine. Park City has enough real cowboys…no cowgirl fashionistas needed.

Donations
Donate the rock-n-roll velour sweatsuit you bought a few years back that you still try to rock tucked in to your UGG’s. Bret Michaels Rock of Love Tour Bus called, they are willing to stop by and pick it up although a catfight might ensue.

Until next time, remember donations make other people happy and give you a tax writeoff.
