Fashion experts say consumers can really get more "bang for their buck" if they look for smart pieces that work well through fall and winter seasons. The Tribune asked two Utah boutique owners for tips on what's on sale this month.

Lori Harris, owner of Mary Jane's shoe and clothing boutique, 613 S. Main, Park City.

Flat sandals in black or chocolate brown » Sandals were big this year and will still be fashionable next spring. Stick with a versatile color such as black or chocolate brown. For fashion longevity, avoid bright colors.

Summer dresses in a bright colors » Hot pink, orange, teal and even white.

These are useful as swimsuit coverups or can be worn in winter with a sweater or blazer, which are coming back into style this winter.

Long "maxi" dresses » These full-length dresses can still be worn into the fall and winter. Look for a dress in a fall or winter fabric, such as chiffon or satin, not cotton. The right dress can make a great outfit for the holiday parties.

Animal prints » Zebra and cheetah are the two most popular patterns. Look for summer dresses, skirts and even tops. For winter, add a solid blazer or sweater on top; wear tights underneath.

Chunky "statement" necklaces and cocktail rings » Skip the beads and jewels. Instead, look for necklaces with chains made of metal or leather cording, or wear several necklaces of different lengths together. Cocktails rings with big rhinestones or gems will look new through fall and the holidays.

Capris » Wear them with high boots in the winter; no need to tuck them in.

Over-the-shoulder satchel and messenger bags » They may be designed for the beach, but they make great bags for schoolbooks and work files.

Blouses » The layered look is especially easy with sleeveless and short-sleeved tops. Add a cardigan or blazer over the top; or wear a long-sleeved thermal T-shirt underneath. Stick with basic solids -- no prints -- that can be reused every season.

Park City Women's Business Network

Member Spotlight: Lori Harris - Mary Jane's

Pink is Hot! It’s obvious Lori Harris given a lot of attention to the Mary Jane’s venture on Park City’s Main Street. You just can’t miss the bright pink striped walls and the eye catching display of shoes, bags and cowboy hats in the windows of the Main Street boutique.

Harris wanted to open a business in a great setting where people were walking to art galleries, restaurants and shops. Old Town is a great spot. Her initial desire was to open a wine bar, but when a close friend told her “This town needs a shoe store, not a wine bar” Lori took the suggestion seriously. With the right space, and a lot of pink paint, Mary Jane’s came to life in 2003.

“You’ve got to be a go-get-it kind of person to be a business owner,” says Harris who was always taught that hard work, good grades and going to college would get you to where you wanted to go. A graduate from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, Lori headed to San Francisco to begin her career path in management consulting, marketing, technology, and even restaurant management.

Through her business ventures she learned she had to be very structured and to sort through all the chaos. She applies that focus to Mary Jane’s and intends to open more locations and start a franchise… when the timing is right. A second Mary Jane’s is already open in St Louis’s eclectic Central West End.

Harris has served as President of the Park City Women’s Business Network. Through the PCWBN fundraiser held each year Harris is able assist Park City High School students going to college.

Lori’s belief that high school graduates should go to college is evident in her work as past President of PCWBN. The annual fundraiser generates money that is given as scholarships to Park City High School female graduates who are heading to college. Harris herself had to seek out assistance to help finance her education. PCWBN is a great way of giving back.
